The project

“Social Integration through Urban Growth Strategies”- “SINERGI” was funded with the support of the European Union under the Programme "Europe for Citizens"

Participation: The project SINERGI involved notably representatives from the local authorities and local administration, citizens associations and civic organizations representatives, researchers, academics, experts and students from the cities of Skopje (Macedonia), Turin (Italy), Zagreb (Croatia) and Lisbon (Portugal).


Location/ Dates: The project
activities took place in the cities of: Turin (Italy) from 24/03/2014 to 26/03/2014; Zagreb (Croatia) from 15/07/2014  to 17/07/2014; Skopje (Macedonia) from 03/12/2014 to 05/12/2014; Lisbon (Portugal) from 14/04/2015 to  16/04/2015; Turin (Italy) from 30/06/2015 to 02/07/2015 and Skopje (Macedonia) from 18/11/2015 to 20/11/2015.

 

Short description:

 The project SINERGI was focused on establishing a network of cooperation between representatives from the city administration, experts, academia, civic organizations that work on promoting and exercising EU knowledge and experience in citizen’s participation in the field of urban planning and development, with promotion of good practices from the partner cities Skopje, Turin, Zagreb and Lisbon.

The aim of the project was organization of activities that created a platform for exchange of knowledge that brought together in a creative and open debate and communication between local authorities, Universities and research community, civil organizations and civil activist and citizens. The project developed and created an open hub where experts and citizens had an opportunity to interact together with the decision makers and different stakeholders that work together on construction of new models of social inclusion in the process of urban development.

Target groups on all project events were city representatives, experts, researchers, representatives from the universities, students as well as representatives from the citizen organizations. Through the six project events, they all have an opportunity to meet their counterparts from other partner cities and universities and to discuss and debate on the management of similar situations. The project activities have reflected and debated the existing EU policies of urban development and explored the potential and benefits of development of new and innovative policies of urban management, importance of citizen participation and influence to development of sustainable economy and showcasing the impact of inclusive strategies to local issues with an European dimension.

 

 

 

 

Six(6)project events have been carried out within this project:

Event 1- Kick off Meeting

Participation: The event involved 107 participants from the city administration, civic organizations representatives, researchers, academics, experts and citizens from the City of Turin, Italy (93 participants), the City of  Zagreb, Croatia (7 participants) and from the City of Skopje, Macedonia (7 participants).

 

Location/ Dates: The event took place in Turin, Italy, from 24/03/2014 to 26/03/2014


Short description:

The aim of this project event was introduction of the project partners, presentation of the SINERGI project structure and project time plan, information about expected project results and deliverables, distribution of partners’ tasks and initial plan for project events and promotion of the SINERGI project. The project network has been established by representatives from local authorities, academics, researchers, experts, citizens associations and civic organizations from the local communities, and informed through a series of presentation by the project leader and project partners, introductory visits to the sites of interest and local good practices and the promotion of the project through contact with media in Torino.

Event 2 - First Thematic Seminar
Participation: The event involved  59 participants from the city administration, civic organizations representatives, researchers, academics, students, experts and citizens from the City of Zagreb, Croatia (47 participants), the City of Turin, Italy (5 participants) and the City of Skopje, Macedonia (7 participants).

 

Location/ Dates: The event took place in Zagreb, Croatia from 15/07/2014 to 17/07/2014


Short description:

The aim of this project event was: Exchange of existing knowledge and experience related to socially inclusive policies of urban management and urban growth among the project partners; Promotion of Digital platform for interactive visualization – Interactive Visualization Tool-InViTo. Project partners and other local stakeholders have been invited to submit scientific and case study papers about the topics of interest for SINERGI project and to present in front of the project partners and participants of the first thematic seminar. The collection of papers and presentations that provided a comprehensive insight of the existing models of governance, research of socially inclusive strategies and practices have been published as a part of the SINERGI Book One –Project for an Inclusive City.

Event 3 - First Thematic Workshop
Participation: The event involved  92 participants from the city administration, civic organizations academics, students,  experts and citizens from the City of Skopje, Macedonia (75 participants), from the City of Turin, Italy (7 participants), from the City of Zagreb, Croatia (6 participants) and from the City of Lisbon, Portugal

(4 participants).

 

Location/ Dates: The event took place in Skopje, Macedonia, from 03/12/2014 to 05/12/2014


Short description:

The main purpose of this project activity interaction between experts, students and citizens on issues and projects that are promoting social inclusion in urban context; Raising awareness of the potential, responsibilities and common values among students and citizens. The workshops has been organized as a people to people interaction between the main stakeholders, citizens, students, researchers, decision makers and local administration, academics and representatives from NGO’s. In the focus of this workshop was a transformation strategies and process of citizen’s inclusion and participation for a part of Skopje. Interactive Visualization Tool was used as a digital tool for enhancement of the visualization of the relevant data providing a useful tool for better understanding of the complexity of the site and the process of inclusion. InViTo was successfully used as a tool for mediation between various stakeholders and interest groups.

 

  

Event 4-Second Thematic Seminar in Lisbon

Participation: The event involved 104 participants from the city administration, civic organizations academics, students, experts and citizens from the City of Lisbon, Portugal (83 participants), from the City of Turin, Italy (7 participants), the City of Zagreb, Croatia (7 participants) and the City of Skopje, Macedonia (7 participants).

 

Location/ Dates: The event took place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 14/04/2015 to 16/04/2015


Short description:

The aim of this project event was introduction of innovative approach on the development of social inclusive strategies for urban growth; Use of the Digital platform for interactive visualization in participation process; Use of novel methods of collection and management of urban data; Adopting new guidelines for smart urban planning and urban growth.  Project partners and other interested participants have provided papers and presentations of innovative and socially inclusive models, policies and practices that enhanced the debate about the innovation in a creation of socially inclusive strategies in urban growth. Selection of presented papers has been incorporated as a part of the SINERGI Book One –Project for an Inclusive City. Visits to a local communities that have been developed as a result of socially integrated strategies of urban development and re-development in Lisbon has been provided by the local partner as part of the process of sharing knowledge between SINERGI project partners.

Event 5– Second Thematic Workshop

Participation: The event involved 89 participants from the city administration, civic organizations, academics, students and experts from the City of Turin, Italy (67 participants), the City of Zagreb, Croatia (7 participants), the City of Lisbon, Portugal (8 participants) and from the City of Skopje, Macedonia (7 participants).

 

Location/ Dates: The event took place in Turin, Italy from 30/06/2015 to 02/07/2015

 

Short description:

The aim of this project event was the opportunity for interaction between the decision makers, experts, students, representives from the academia and citizens on issues related to: Novel strategies of urban growth; Innovative use of ICT in participation,negotiation and delivery of solutions; Raising awarness of decision makers on potential of EU policies on solving local urban issues; Building a sense of belonging among participants to the area of common European issues; Delivery of innovative and creative urban strategies for development.This event was organized as a creative environment for close colaboration and interacation between the local stakeholders within the process of exploration of innovative and non-standard proposals for future development of part of the city of Turin that is undergoing the transformation.Visit of the site of interest and direct insight of the local residents  has been performed by the workshop participants and the students from Politecnico di Torino as a preparatoty work for the workshop.The participants had an opportunity to develop innovative and context sensitive strategies through exploration of synergies between citizens’ vision, infrastructure, commerece, transport, local governance and urban planning enhanced through innovative use of parametrically based interactive visualization tool- InViTo. Project quality and participation satisfaction survey have been presented at the final meeting.

Event 6- Final Conference

Participation: The event involved 77 participants from the city administration, civic organizations academics, students and experts from the City of Skopje, Macedonia (56 participants), the City of Zagreb, Croatia ( 4 participants) the City of Lisbon, Portugal (8 participants) and from the City of Turin, Italy (7 participants) and  key-note speakers on the conference (2).

 

Location/ Dates: The event took place Skopje, Macedonia from 18/11/2015 to 20/11/2015

 

Short description:

The aim of this project event was the Conclusion of the project activities, Organization of International Scientific Conference with impact broader than the project framework, Evaluation of project results; Adoption of draft of final project report; Establishment of the platform for continuous exchange of knowledge and information between partner cities, Plan of follow-up activities, Promotion of Center of four cities as a joint platform for continuous cooperation among cities, Universities and civic organizations. International Scientific Conference “Inclusive/Exclusive Cities” was organized as a forum for exchange of knowledge beyond the project partners with participants from Europe and Asia. Papers from the conference are published within the SINERGI Book Two: “Inclusive/Exclusive Cities”. Final meeting of project Steering Committee has adopted an agenda for the follow-up activities of the network obtaining a sustainability of project results through Urban Center of Four Cities in Skopje. Final project quality and satisfaction survey and self-evaluation has been performed with participants of the SINERGI meeting and the results have been incorporated in the outline of the follow-up activities established by the project partners.
